Sri Lanka Thanks India and Pakistan for Cyclone Relief
Former Sri Lankan cricketer Angelo Mathews has expressed his gratitude to India, Pakistan, and other nations for their assistance in the wake of Cyclone Ditwah, which caused widespread flooding and destruction in Sri Lanka. Mathews specifically highlighted the crucial role of armed forces in rescue operations.
Mathews' Appreciation
In a post on X, Mathews thanked those involved in the rescue efforts, stating, "A special thanks to all our armed forces for risking their lives to save all Sri Lankans who are affected and stranded." He further acknowledged the contributions of Indian and Pakistani armed forces, saying, "Also a big thank you to Indian and Pakistani and all other armed forces trying to save lives in Sri Lanka risking their lives! All Sri Lankans truly appreciate your efforts."
India's Operation Sagar Bandhu
India initiated Operation Sagar Bandhu on November 28 to provide search and rescue support and humanitarian aid to Sri Lanka. The assistance has been delivered via both sea and air, utilizing Indian Air Force aircraft and naval vessels. As of recent reports:
- Over 53 tonnes of relief material have been dispatched since November 28.
- More than 2,000 stranded individuals have been evacuated from Sri Lanka.
Multi-National Rescue Efforts
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reported that National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are actively conducting search and rescue operations in severely affected regions, aiding flood-stricken families and ensuring their safety. Over 150 individuals have been rescued through these combined efforts.
With support from the Sri Lanka Air Force, Chetak helicopters from INS Vikrant and MI-17 helicopters of the IAF have been airlifting stranded people, including pregnant women, infants, and injured individuals. Rescued individuals included nationals from a diverse range of countries:

Devastation in Sri Lanka
As of Sunday, Sri Lanka reported 334 deaths and 370 missing due to floods and landslides linked to the extreme weather since November 16.
